Master Gardening Program

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County will hold an on-line training via Zoom for the Master Gardener Volunteer Program during the month of April 2021. This compact, intensive training will be held Mondays through Thursdays, April 5-29, from 9 am to 12 pm each day. The training prepares participants for activities in the community as a volunteer that advises and educates the public on gardening and horticulture. The Master Gardener Volunteer program is one of the largest volunteer organizations in the country with more than 86,076 volunteers in 49 states.

The program includes instruction in all aspects of horticulture including botany, soils, entomology, plant pathology, pest management, pesticides, organic gardening, composting, weeds, invasive species, turf grass, herbaceous plants, woody plants, pruning, fruit and vegetable production, plant propagation, landscaping, and organic gardening. Upon completion of the course participants will be required to participate in a service learning project. The project will include weekly gardening tasks and hands-on learning at the local Urban Mission garden. All produce from this garden is donated to the food pantry at the Urban Mission in Watertown. As garden ‘interns’, participants will receive garden training from seasoned Master Gardeners and Cooperative Extension educators.
