Adult Book Discussion: September 18th, Runaway by Alice Munro., “WINNER OF THE 2013 NOBEL PRIZE® IN LITERATURE.
The incomparable Alice Munro’s bestselling and rapturously acclaimed Runaway is a book of extraordinary stories about love and its infinite betrayals and surprises, from the title story about a young woman who, though she thinks she wants to, is incapable of leaving her husband, to three stories about a woman named Juliet and the emotions that complicate the luster of her intimate relationships. In Munro’s hands, the people she writes about–women of all ages and circumstances, and their friends, lovers, parents, and children–become as vivid as our own neighbors. It is her miraculous gift to make these stories as real and unforgettable as our own.”
Octobers book selection will be The Good Lord Bird by James McBride.

"Chain Carry" Driving Tour
On Saturday September 6, the Lewis County Historical Society is hosting a Driving Tour of historical homes in Lewis County that were in existence during the War of 1812. This is part of a series of events co-hosted by the Dodge Pratt Northam Art and Community Center, Boonville Historical Club, the Landmark Society of Greater Utica, the Oneida County Historical Society and the Martinsburg Historical Society. The event commemorates the 1814 “Chain Carry”.
On August 29, 1814, General Izard was ordered to depart from Lake Champlain for Sackets Harbor with 4,000 of his best men to defend the seaway. The patriots traveled for almost a month on foot carrying chains and cannons through the wilderness of New York State on what was then the first state road. This road was renamed the Military Road in honor of that march. The march was from Saratoga up through Boonville and Lewis County to Sackets Harbor.
On that day the original Martinsburg Town Hall and the General Walter Martin Mansion (Greystone) will be open to the public from 10 am to 3pm. At 3 pm Steve Wallace will present a lecture on the War of 1812 at the Mansion.
During the week prior to the event, brochures containing a brief history of each of the 14 homes or sites along or near the route the soldiers took through Lewis County will be available at the Historical Society Office, Lowville. A map showing the location of each building is included in the brochure.
On Saturday the 6th, brochures can be obtained at the General Walter Martin Mansion and at the Dodge Pratt Northam booth in Boonville. Information for other events taking place in Boonville that day can be obtained by contacting the Dodge Pratt Northam Art and Community Center or viewing the Lewis County Historical Society’s website at ...more
